테슬라의 모델S 신형 모델이 10배 비싼 가격의 스포츠카를 제치고 세계에서 가장 빠른 차가 됐다.
테슬라 모델 S P100D가 정지 상태에서 출발해 시속이 60마일(약 96.6㎞)까지 올라가는 데 걸린 시간이 불과 2.28초로 역대 최고로 빨랐다.
공도를 달릴 수 있는 차량이 시속 60마일 도달 시간 2.3초를 깬 것은 이번이 처음이다. 150만달러짜리 페라리의 라페라리나 110만달러의 매클라렌 P1, 84만5천달러짜리 포르쉐 918스파이더 등 훨씬 더 비싼 슈퍼카를 앞질렀다.
페라리나 포르쉐 차는 좌석이 2개뿐이고 짐 실을 공간도 거의 없지만 모델 S는 널찍한 트렁크가 있고 작은 어린아이들만 앉을 수 있는 뒤쪽을 향한 자리 2개까지 쓰면 최대 최대 7명이 탈 수 있다.
모델 S P100D는 시속 30, 40, 50, 60마일에 도달할 때까지는 어떤 차보다 빨랐다. 전기차는 내연기관보다 토크, 즉 엔진을 돌리는 힘이 좋아서 가속력이 뛰어나다.
페라리 라페라리는 시속 70마일까지 가는데 0.1초 빨랐으며 포르쉐 918과 매클라렌 P1은 시속 80마일에 빨리 도달했다. 속도가 빨라질수록 즉각적인 토크보다 출력이 이점을 발휘하기 때문이다.
테슬라는 일정 거리를 얼마나 빨리 달리는지를 평가하는 드랙 레이싱에서도 페라리 등에 뒤질 것으로 보인다.
모델 S는 0.25 마일 거리를 10.5초에 주파했으며 최종 시속이 125마일 나왔다. 모터트렌드 테스트에서 기록을 보유한 라페라리는 같은 거리를 달리는 데 9.7초밖에 걸리지 않으며 마지막에는 시속 148.5 마일을 찍었다.
